Spectacular Ancient Temple Carved Out of A Giant Solid Rock

Hinduism, unlike other religions, does not have a fixed set of rules. In the Hindu religion, it is believed everyone has three lives, the past, present, and future. What happens to someone in their present life will decide what happens in their future life.

If someone behaves badly in their present life, they most likely become an insect or animal in their next life! There are three main gods, Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. All of the three main gods have lower gods to assist them in carrying out their duties. Shiva is the creator and destroyer of life, Vishnu rules the world and Brahma is the creator of the world.

The temple symbolizes Mount Kailash, the home of Lord Shiva, one of the most important ancient Hindu deities. The temple is one of the largest rock-cut ancient Hindu temples located in Ellora, Maharashtra, India.

The Kailasa temple is the 16th from a total of 34 caves which were literally excavated out of the surrounding rock. Mainstream scholars indicate that the ancient caves were built sometime around the fifth and tenth centuries AD, but many others disagree suggesting the caves are much older.

It took about 150 years and a total of 7,000 stonecutters to carve this spectacular Kailasa Temple. It will be difficult even with our modern technology to replicated with ease this ancient site.

Kailasa Temple among the caves also stands out as the highest architectural attainment during the rule of Rashtrakuta dynasty. Thousands of sculptures, drawings, and inscriptions in Ellora exude artistic richness and philosophy making the caves a major achievement of ancient Indian civilization.

Virtually every surface is lavishly embellished with symbols and figures.  Exteriorly it is richly carved with images of gods or goddess, sculptures, and paintings.  Many sculpted figures tell the tales of the great Hindu epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana.

Whoever built these fascinating caves thousands of years ago surely had more than just ordinary hammers, chisels, and picks, like many ancient cultures around the globe who erected some of the most complex and extraordinary structures in the history of civilization, that still cause sensation among archaeologists who are unable to explain how such structures were built at all.
